The Curve; From freeloaders to superfans (Presented by IKT-Norge)
Speaker: Nicholas Lovell (Author)
The opening day will focus on the technology that is integrated in our daily lives, how it impacts our health, business, home living and sharing of our every day experiences. We will meet both Nordic and global players from the technology scene presenting their view of what’s next, what’s important and how to make money out of it.
In his Key Note, author Nicholas Lovell describes a model for making money in an age where many customers expect products for free. In 2014, Lovell has kindly agreed to visit by:Larm to explain how his model works and how this model can apply to different products and services across industries.
For most of the last century, companies strove to control costs and shift as many units as possible. But now the price of many digital products has dropped to zero, requiring a new kind of business model. The Curve is about accepting that millions of people now expect your product for free – because a small number of high spenders are enough to build a profitable business.
In games, free is the norm, but some fans now spend hundreds or thousands of dollars while playing a single title. That means the focus is no longer on how many units you can sell, but on how you can satisfy those users who are happy to pay enormous amounts of money for things they value. This idea has already transformed areas like music, books, and film, and is rapidly spreading to the physical world as 3D printing becomes a reality and piracy hits businesses of every kind.
With stories drawn from cutting-edge artists, video games and more, The Curve shows you how to forge relationships with your biggest fans and sustain long-term success.
Writer, consultant and gamer Nicholas Lovell is an expert advisor to creative businesses in the digital age. His insight and advice is helping thousands of creators to be successful in a world where prices tend toward zero, by giving away their content for free while allowing super-fans to spend lots of money on things they truly value. His blog, GAMESbrief, is read by those seeking to learn how digital is transforming gaming – and how to apply that knowledge to other industries. His clients includes Firefly, nDreams and Square Enix (creators of Tomb Raider), as well as Channel 4 and IPC Media. His articles have appeared in TechCrunch, Wired and the Wall Street Journal. “The curve online” http://www.thecurveonline.com/

How to design sound for a post apocalyptic (game)world? (Presented by PressFire)
Speaker: Max Lachmann (Avalanche Studios)
Known for their vast and open game worlds in the “Just Cause” series, Avalanche have developed their own techniques to create a believable and dynamic soundscape in this genre of games that have very different requirements than the more linear and cinematic games.
Lachmann has been working in this swedish studio since the start, and knows the story of the road they have travelled very well. The studio is one of the few big ones that’s still independent, and a few years back they established an office in New York. 2014 will see the release of the “Mad Max” game, and there will probably more “Just Cause” releases. Last year, Avalanche embarked on an inspirational trip to tropic Costa Rica to collect raw materials for the games they are currently developing (article in norwegian).

Music streaming in Norway: Four trends, Four years later (Presented by Hedmark University College and R2W)
Speaker: By Arnt Maasø, Associate professor, Dr. art. Dept. of Media and Communication, University of Oslo
At bylarm 2010, music streaming service WiMP was launched to the public. Just a few months later, research project Clouds & Concerts gathered the first streaming data from WiMP for use in studies on music listening patterns. Since then, the research project (a collaboration between the University of Oslo, WiMP and Telenor) has analysed streaming during the same period in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013, giving unique insight into the journey from a fresh streaming startup to a mature actor in the most developed streaming market in the world.
In Norway, the digital share keeps growing, accounting for 77,6% of the turnover in the Norwegian music business (IFPI 2014), and turning a decade of decreasing sales into growth for the last two consecutive years. The presentation thus also offers possible insight into the future of the streaming for less developed markets and actors.
Four emerging trends are singled out for this presentation:
1) Mobile streaming
2) Heterogeneity and novelty
3) Individuality and everyday habits
4) The role of editorial presence for local artists
