by:Larm 2014 and Red Bull Music Academy are delighted to welcome one of rock music’s all time legends, John Cale, for the headline Q&A of this year’s festival. The 71 year old Welsh-born singer, songwriter and producer has bridged the divide between avant garde sound, rock and pop since the early 1960s and has been involved in countless seminal recordings including 15 solo LPs to date.
Cale made his name of course with Lou Reed as a founder member of The Velvet Underground, a band associated with the New York Pop Art movement of Andy Warhol. Short lived but highly influential, they could be said to have been almost entirely responsible for the independent guitar music sound of the 1980s and early 90s.
Since the late 60s Cale also worked as the producer of a string of crucial albums including The Stooges’ debut, Nico’s “Marble Index” and “Desertshore”, Patti Smith’s “Horses”, The Modern Lovers’ “Modern Lovers”, Happy Mondays’ “Squirrel And G-Man…”, the Jesus Lizard’s “Jesus Lizard” and many more. As an instrumentalist he has appeared on albums with Nick Drake, Terry Riley, Brian Eno, Ian Hunter, The Replacements, Marc Almond, Manic Street Preachers and others. His classic solo discography began in 1970 with “Vintage Violence”, and his latest LP, “Shifty Adventures In Nookie Wood”, came out on Domino in 2012.
John Cale’s eclectic career, musical versatility and incredible broadmindedness make him an ideal candidate for taking part in by:Larm’s inspirational agenda. We look forward to hearing him share his wisdom, experience and the secrets of reinvention over half a century.
