Speaker: Interviewer: Todd Burns
There’s a reason James Murphy is known as the genial frontman of electronica. Since his youthful days in Manhattan, Murphy has championed the mixing-up of indie and dance genres with powerful bass and beat-heavy disco, and is best known as one of the founders of LCD Soundsystem and DFA Records.
As lead vocalist and songwriter in LCD Soundsystem, he was nominated for two Grammys for their second album The Sound Of Silver. After three albums and a string of cult hits, the band came to an end in 2010, and since then Murphy has established himself as a well known producer, film maker and DJ. 2013 was a hectic year for the 43 year old: he finished making his short film “Little Duck”, and among other things acted as co-producer of Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ “Mosquito” and Arcade Fire’s “Reflektor”.
About Red Bull Music Academy:
The 16th edition of Red Bull Music Academy will be held in Tokyo in November 2014. The Academy will bring together 60 hand-picked, talented producers, vocalists, composers and DJs from many nations who will take part in presentations with musical pioneers, perform at Tokyo’s coolest venues and have their own material recorded in specially designed studios. More than 1500 musical heads have taken part in Red Bull Music Academy over its 15 years, and many previous participants have gone on to become significant innovators in their genres, including Aloe Blacc, Flying Lotus, Hudson Mohawke and Katy B. To celebrate their 15th anniversary, RBMA have just put out For The Record, a book which documents unique conversations between some of the most pioneering artists who have helped shape today’s musical landscape. February 2014 sees the release of the documentary RBMA 15, which looks back at the Academy’s highlights. The film includes interviews with former lecturers such as Bernie Worrell, DJ Assault, Brian Eno, Richie Hawtin, Thundercat, Egyptian Lover, Lee “Scratch” Perry, Big Freedia, Nile Rodgers and Ken Scott.
