Speaker: Interviewed by: Rob Young
A Krautrock legend comes to Oslo! Irmin Schmidt is a founder member and keyboard player of Can, the German band who have been named as a vital influence by everyone from Portishead, James Murphy, New Order, Factory Floor, Public Image Ltd, Mogwai and Radiohead to Kanye West (who sampled their “Sing Swan Song”).
Hot on the heels of the first-time-ever release of a box set of the complete Can catalogue on vinyl, the by:Larm audience can hear Irmin sharing his memories of an incredibly diverse musical life. After a classical education as pianist, conductor and composer, studying under Stockhausen and Ligeti, he formed Can in late 60s Cologne, combining avant garde music with rock, jazz and hypnotic rhythms. The band’s powerful influence came to define the Krautrock sound.
2 December 2013 saw the long-awaited release of the Can back catalogue, remastered on vinyl for the very first time. A compilation of Irmin’s solo work, “Villa Wunderbar”, has also just been released on Mute Records. We look forward to welcoming a true musical alchemist to by:Larm.
