With no more than two singles released, Tove Lo has distinguished herself as one of Scandinavia’s most distinctive and promising pop voices. Following the highly successful “Love Ballads and Habits”, she is now back with her third single “Out of Mind”, a dark, yet shimmering song about moving on. She is currently working on an EP, which in its entirety will tell a love story from beginning to end.
“I want the listener to feel what it is that I am singing about,” Tove Lo says. “Even the ones who don’t listen to the lyrics should feel what it is the songs convey. Music is at its best when it is honest. When you really pour your heart into the songs.”
It is hard not to be swept away by Tove Lo’s dark, captivating music. With heavy, electronic beats, crystal clear melodies, and honest lyrics, she strikes an emotion with every single note, whether it is love or sadness, euphoria or desperation.
“It is when the heart is aching that I really feel the need to write,” Tove says. “In its entirety, my upcoming EP will tell a love story from beginning to end. The song Love Ballad is about the moment you decide to give everything to another person, while Habits shows what happens when everything is screwed up and you just want to freak out. Out of Mind deals with the stage after that, when your broken heart has mended, but the scars are still there.”
Behind the name Tove Lo you will find the twenty-five-year-old Tove Nilsson. Growing up in a suburb to Stockholm, she started expressing herself through writing at an early age. With time she also developed a passion for music, and in her late teens she began transforming her texts into songs, while playing in various bands. At the age of 22, she set up a recording studio in a shed in her cousins’ garden, where she embarked on writing and producing music. No more than a year later, she was signed as a songwriter by Warner Chappell, and she spent the following years travelling the world, writing songs for the likes of Icona Pop, Gavin Degraw, Girls Aloud, and Cher Lloyd. It turned out to be an intense period for Tove, who experienced both successes and setbacks, and with time she developed a desire to be an artist in her own right.
“It happened that I wrote songs for other artists that I, in the end, didn’t want to give away, as they were too personal,” Tove says. “That was when I decided to sing them myself.”
While her job as a songwriter demands her to enter into the roles of others, the artist Tove Lo is still herself. With a rarely seen integrity and humanity, she renounces the conventional idea of a female pop star.
“It is with both pride and anguish that I do it,” Tove says. “It can be very exposing not to have a persona to hide behind, but I would never have been able to maintain one anyway.”
