From Sweden to Barbados and back. From the West Indian heat to the Scandinavian coolness. Naomi Pilgrim is all little bit of both. Though born in Sweden to a Swedish mother and Barbadian father, the family decided to give their one-year old daughter a West Indian experience and moved to Jamaica. Surrounded by music all day Naomi showed and early interest in sounds. Opening her eyes like an alarm clock at 5AM every morning, trying to imitate the sounds and the birdcall, Naomi soon got the nick name Early Bird. After a wile on the beautiful island, the family decided it was time to move back to more northern latitudes and returned to Sweden. But it was important to all of them not to leave the culture behind and Naomi spent most of her upbringing in a Swedish/ West Indian collective in Stockholm.
Music has always been present in Naomi’s life. With her dad being a musician and the founder of one of the first Swedish reggae bands and her mum a constantly singing painter, she was surrounded by sound. It has also been music that Naomi has turned to throughout her life to find strength and happiness.
Turning twenty years old and realising she had been traveling the West Indies plenty of times without never actually making it to Barbados she decided it was time to fly over. Visiting the island and her relatives filled her with energy that opened her eyes to new musical expressions. From enjoying music as a hobby the feeling suddenly evolved in to something completely different. A while after she returned back home she found herself singing professionally with artists like Lykke Li, Newtimers, Agnes & Christian Falk.
However, it wasn’t until earlier this year after being introduced to the producer Fredrik Okazaki that she was ready to take that final leap and really start fighting for her dreams to come true. With debut single “No Gun” and her first EP which will be released in early 2014 you can hear the double nature of Naomi Pilgrim. Hard knocking beats, balearic choirs and gritty soul vocals. It’s the bit of West India kneaded by Scandinavian hands. Enjoy.
