On November 6th 2013, Swedish artist and composer Jenny Wilson released her fourth solo LP “DEMAND THE IMPOSSIBLE!” on Sony Music.
“DEMAND THE IMPOSSIBLE!” is the powerful testimony of a woman whose career and personal life have experienced life-changing conflicts: between individual and society, between body and soul, and even within the body itself. In its poetic dedication to the potential of the individual, “DEMAND THE IMPOSSIBLE!” portrays Wilson’s lifelong creative urge to identify herself in a post-modern world with an ugly paradox at its heart: a world where the idea of the individual is prized above all else, but where the voice of the individual has to fight to be heard.
After leaving her riotous group project First Floor Power soon after collaborating with The Knife’s Karin Dreijer, Wilson released two solo LPs that explored her identity through a litany of styles. 2005’s “Love and Youth” saw her affinity with Tori Amos and Kate Bush pulled through a driving electro-pop sound, whilst 2009’s “Hardships!” re-imagined early 2000s US r’n’b with a characteristically Swedish, glacial edge. With her unfailing desire to create Wilson soon after began a collaboration with the Tensta Gospel Choir and accompanying band, but it was during this time that she discovered, at thirty-five years old and with two young children, that she now faced the ultimate fight. Cancer.
Throughout Wilson’s solo work the female body – as vessel, as canvas, as site of exploration – had been a source of strength. Now, it had become a battleground: “Cancer is like a heavy clump of clay. It’s something totally undesired. It’s ugly and useless in it’s heaviness, but you can’t just carry it around. You have to shape it into something.” And shape it she did. In the three years since her diagnosis, Wilson composed two theatrical scores, two sound-art installations, shot a film inspired by her own poetry, wrote and recorded her double album “BLAZING I & II” with material from her Tensta Gospel Choir collaboration. With the talent of long-time video director and friend Daniel Wirtberg to visualise her sound, together they created “DEMAND THE IMPOSSIBLE!” – works as feats of strength in the face of an uncertain future.
Now, with the all-clear from cancer, DEMAND THE IMPOSSIBLE! represents more than just struggle. It is a daring, passionate pop album that represents the possibilities beyond it. In Wilson’s own words, “I wanted to make a brave, explosive and fantastic album. I am very proud of it, I think I’ve never written lyrics with a sharper pen – ever.”
With its heartfelt lyrics and eclectic re-imagining of pop, electronica and r’n’b, DEMAND THE IMPOSSIBLE! is Wilson’s most intense body of work to date, figuring her as a unique figure within the vast landscape of modern pop.
