Speaker: By Arnt Maasø, Associate professor, Dr. art. Dept. of Media and Communication, University of Oslo
At bylarm 2010, music streaming service WiMP was launched to the public. Just a few months later, research project Clouds & Concerts gathered the first streaming data from WiMP for use in studies on music listening patterns. Since then, the research project (a collaboration between the University of Oslo, WiMP and Telenor) has analysed streaming during the same period in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013, giving unique insight into the journey from a fresh streaming startup to a mature actor in the most developed streaming market in the world.
In Norway, the digital share keeps growing, accounting for 77,6% of the turnover in the Norwegian music business (IFPI 2014), and turning a decade of decreasing sales into growth for the last two consecutive years. The presentation thus also offers possible insight into the future of the streaming for less developed markets and actors.
Four emerging trends are singled out for this presentation:
1) Mobile streaming
2) Heterogeneity and novelty
3) Individuality and everyday habits
4) The role of editorial presence for local artists
